Yamuna Manthan will bring together multiple stakeholders from the government, public & private sectors, and NGOs and trusts to discuss the role of technology and community connect and take the collaborated outcomes to all critical constituencies, including the villages. The outcome of the discussion and expert talks during the conference will assist the ongoing initiatives by the office of The Lt. Governor of Delhi, Delhi Government and Government of India, to revive, restore and rejuvenate the river.
Key discussions on e-flow, floodplains, and sustainable restoration of the Yamuna.
Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi
Today River Yamuna faces many challenges including those which impact its ecological health. Diversion of water for agriculture, deforestation along the river, agricultural run-off and population explosion in urban settlements along the river keeping the STPs under pressure are some of the challenges it faces today. Further, to this, the 1994 water sharing agreement which left just 3% of water for the Yamuna River from the Hathnikund barrage, has been just inadequate to meet the e-flow required downstream.
Floodplain Development and River Health
This session will discuss challenges and possibilities of flood plain development and restoration. It will explore projects like the Yamuna Riverfront Development which aims to restore riverbanks, prevent encroachment, create green spaces such as Asita Park and Bansera, and Biodiversity Parks enhance the river’s capacity to handle pollution (such eutrophication at Kalindi Kunj), aid ecosystem restoration and minimize anthropogenic impact. It will also examine replicable case studies elsewhere as well as potential models of floodplain management.
